My brother's a rock star...does that make me cool?

Yup, the Ride Theory are on the road, and the People's Little Brother is kicking ass and taking names on the West Coast. I am so proud. Check out their kickass tour blog at http://www.creativecreature.ca/almostfamous.

In honour of all things rock, here's my number one music-related book pick. On a Cold Road by Dave Bidini of the Rheostatics is by far the greatest of the road story/tourbus/poetic travel memoir genre. It's chock-full of Bidini's trademark deadpan writing and beautiful, troubadour-like storytelling about his life with the Rheos, all leading up to an amazing climax in his description of their opening show with the Tragically Hip at Maple Leaf Gardens. It's made people who were at that show CRY for god's sake (sorry to give you away, Freya, and also sorry for exagerating if you didn't actually cry, I just know you liked it). The book's also full of Hidden Track memories from other CanRock veterans, from Goddo to Trooper to that scourge upon humanity, the Guess Who (impeach Bachman). Try it. You'll rock it.

I did actually cry... that show was in 1996, and I was 16 and an absolute mess. I felt like writing to Bidini and he provided his address, so I almost did. Then I just went to a reading of his next book and asked him random questions after almost passing out and having to sit down. I am classy.

Freya if there is one thing I know about you it is that you are pure class, whether you are attending a rock show, baking a pie, or dressing up as the emerald city.

Cait, the answer your question is: No, your brother being a rock star does not make you cool. Nor does being the friend of a person in a rock band make you cool even if that person was in The Gandharvas (Zing!). You will, however, be pleased to note (or maybe you will only shrug and say "huh") when I tell you that I am now reading Chuck Klosterman's Fargo Rock City. It's not bad, sometimes quite funny, though often, in my opinion, a little off-base in the communications theory department but relatively enjoyable if only for the feeling of communion I get from knowing that someone out there also liked Ratt and remembers all the random Heavy Metal/Glam Metal bands that I do and I remember some really random ones (Right on King Diamond!). In honour of this feeling of communion I would like to post the following message in the off-chance that good ol' Chuck Googles himself and comes across your page:

Dear Chuck,

WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO PROVE? We all know that your interest (read: obsession) with Axl Rose is less based on your fascination with him as a rock "icon" and more about how he gave you hope that perhaps, as a red-headed man, women would find you attractive as well.

PS I hope you didn't hold your breath waiting for that to happen. See the original post about you on this blog for evidence of this.

Love,

Lita Ford

You can now proudly say five people read your blog on a regular basis. I'm very impressed, and at the same time feel some anxiety due to the fact that I don't read nearly enough. Perhaps when I go home for christmas break I'll check out some of your suggested books. It would probably be a better use of my free time than what I had planeed, which was to play guitar hero for two weeks straight.

My dear Lita, those were totally the criticisms I expected from little old you. I figured you'd at least enjoy it on a name-dropping level...and you're right, Klosterman will never be a heartthrob, not even to meeeeee. Well, that's kind of a lie; he doesn't look TOO bad on the back flap of his new book. He has a BEARD! In conclusion we will debate these points at length when you. are. here. soon!

thanks for upping my readership, Jon Boy. I anticipate great things in your future, such as a Guitar Hero blog of truly epic proportions. I'll compile a list of video game related books for you in time for Christmas.
